WA 10R Challenge - 21st May 2017

P5210027

Champion Lakes Ten Rater Challenge 2017.

Today was a wet and squally winter’s day. The sky would be blue for a while with a 6 to 8 knot wind blowing, but then a front would come through and the associated gusts building to 15 knots. After a while, the front would pass, and we were back into the lighter winds again. Luckily, the wind direction was from the south-west, which at Champion Lakes makes for reasonable steady winds without too many shifts.

Sean Wallis came down to be the race officer and he did a really good job. He has clearly been watching the IOM Worlds making rapid changes of course, setting up 4 top marks as well as having the “good start” call off to a tee. He was itching to call a “uniform flag”, but we didn’t give him the opportunity!

Unfortunately only seven skippers were able to attend, with a couple of our regular skippers away. Four Diamonds, a Prizm, a NRW and a Sanga were in the fleet.

TAS RM Southern Championship - 21st May

210517 26

Sunday 21st May 2017
Well, the dam turned on a cracker of a day with steady northerly winds gusting to 10 knots greeting the six starters. B rigs were selected for the morning’s session before changing up to A rigs after lunch as the wind lightened off. However the northerly wind of around 6 knots still made for an afternoon of excellent racing conditions. Ray Joyce’s Katana hit its stride, winning 10 of the 15 races sailed, showing some dominant boat speed. Weed was only a slight problem but not enough to seriously affect results.

John Hall sailed consistently to take out second, with Lisa Blackwood third on the podium. So congratulations to the placegetters, and many thanks to the PRO, David Murfet.

WA South West Championships and Busselton Cup - 6/7th May 2017

IOM skippers in WA spent  the  weekend  of  May  6  and  7  down  in  Busselton  for  the  South-  West Championships and the Busselton Cup. The idea of the two regattas is to encourage skippers who may not consider themselves at the level of highly competitive regatta, but would like to participate in a more relaxed event.

This year, there were 13 in the Championships, and 5 in the Cup on Saturday, and 7 on Sunday. Most of the Perth guys drove down on Friday afternoon and spent the weekend in various locations. It happened to be the weekend of the Busselton Ironman event, so unfortunately, accommodation  was at a premium. Thankfully some of the local guys hosted a few of the skippers.

S/QLD RM Championship - 6th May 2017

Pine Rivers Radio Yacht Club

11 boats were registered for the event with 9 boats making it onto the water. All skippers stayed with their A rigs for the full day as the winds were fairly steady, blowing S/SW in the morning turning to S/SE in the afternoon. This necessitated only one course change.

Greg Torpy won the day on 14 points clear ahead of Jason Nasmith on 39 points followed by Ray Nasmith on 43 points.

It was a most enjoyable day for competitors and organisers with little or no disputes and any issues sorted out on the water, a definite tribute to all skippers in the event.

The PRO for the day was Bruce Frazer, Bruce and his helpers did an excellent job. David Black again offered his assistance with the scoring which was readily accepted.

NSW 10R Class GP 3 - 29th April 2017

10R GP 3 Report 29 April 2017 – MAZDA Trophy Hosted by Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club

This event was sailed at the Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club on Saturday 29 April 2017. The weather Gods were not with us again this year, with sailing being postponed for 1 hour due to no wind but a fine sunny day on Lake Illawarra. When the wind did settle in it was from 1800 from the forecast direction at a 3-5 knot ENE. Course was set as port hand windward / leeward and the 16 entrants sailed just four heats before lunch was taken.

Sailing recommenced in the afternoon with very light variable wind strength and direction making it necessary to change the courses from ENE to a 7-10knot SSE wind which made it a bit more interesting with a heavier chop than most sailors were used to. Sixteen races were contested with the dreaded “Bromley Braid” / Lake Weed showing up during the last 2 races, the rest of the racing was undertaken in good winds and “sea” state.

Southern Tasmanian IOM Championship - 2nd Apr

4aprTAS

Eleven skippers fronting for the first event of the 2017-18 season, the 2017 Southern Tasmanian IOM Championship. A fine and sunny autumn's day with light and variable winds, mainly from the west to south to around 3 knots, slowly building during the day to maybe 5-6 knots in the afternoon. With the variable wind directions, course setting was a challenge but all races had a windward/leeward component and generally short one lap races in the lighter airs and two laps when the breeze was settled. Despite the efforts of the awesome foursome on Saturday, there were still a few victims to strands of weed, and a few boats getting caught in the weed banks as well.
