South Australian 2017 IOM State Championships

P1020725

1st and 2nd April 2017 Hosted by Adelaide Radio Control Yacht Racing Club on behalf of the SARYA.

Twenty Four skippers entered for the event which was sailed in two fleets at Hart’s Mill in Port Adelaide. Fourteen of the skippers travelled from interstate and their effort in making the journey is appreciated. The top end of the fleet included many who were placed high in the finishing order of the recent Australian Championships which were held in NSW last February.

Southern Tasmanian IOM Championship - 2nd Apr

4aprTAS

Eleven skippers fronting for the first event of the 2017-18 season, the 2017 Southern Tasmanian IOM Championship. A fine and sunny autumn's day with light and variable winds, mainly from the west to south to around 3 knots, slowly building during the day to maybe 5-6 knots in the afternoon. With the variable wind directions, course setting was a challenge but all races had a windward/leeward component and generally short one lap races in the lighter airs and two laps when the breeze was settled. Despite the efforts of the awesome foursome on Saturday, there were still a few victims to strands of weed, and a few boats getting caught in the weed banks as well.

The Great Southern Championship and Albany Cup 2017

Western Australia’s Albany weekend proved to be another successful regatta all sorts of wind, great sailing, good company, good dining out, plenty of mishaps and plenty of fun had by all.

The regatta really started on Friday night with dinner at Rustlers. Local skippers and Perth ring-ins mixed amusement and in depth sailing discussions with normal ribbing and pseudo slander. It was great to see Moby again as he has been away from sailing with other work and family commitments. Unfortunately he was unable to sail things were subsequently a lot quieter in the control area.

S/QLD Dragon Force 65 Champs - 18th March

 RG665A

We had a good turnout for the day with 17 competitors and were able to complete 17 races by about 15:05.
The quality of the racing was excellent even though we had one of those variable wind days that are familiar at Springfield, but with many quite brisk events. We set the start towards a predominately western breeze and were able to maintain that course for the whole day. We have had some feedback from a few of the competitors who spoke very highly of the event and the way it was run, so I guess we can now feel confident for future events at Springfield Lakes.

TAS Herb Tyson Memorial Trophy for A Class- 17th March

22marTAS

A small fleet of 7 boats for the rescheduled Herb Tyson Trophy for A Class for 2016. Conditions were ideal at Montrose Bay with a sunny cloudless sky, an incoming tide, and a steady 3 to 6 knot northerly on arrival which slowly eased with patches of lighter conditions throughout the morning. Of the seven boats racing, one was not included in the results due to a measurement issue, however for his first go at the controls of an A Class, Ray Joyce sailed remarkably well. Veteran skipper Michael Hickman dominated the morning with 3 wins, 2 seconds and a third. Tank Walter also sailed well with 4 podium placings including a win in Race 4. Cliff Eaves was on the podium a couple of times and the Silver Fox Peter Darcy not having one of his better days but notching up a win in Race 6. Ray Joyce, although not in contention for the points, took a victory in Race 2 with a couple of podium finishes as well, and Kyle Stewart was up there with a couple of minor podiums.

Queensland 10 Rater Championships – March 12

By Mark Perkin – PRYC 10R Fleet Captain

The latest 10 Rater championship event was held under fine conditions at Emerald Lakes, with 11 boats turning out on the day. The event also attracted quite a number of onlookers during the course of the day. It was great to see the Sunshine Coast boys come down and compete in the event.

You could say it was a case of diamonds are forever, with the Graham Bantock designed boats taking a clean sweep of the top 3 places.

The sailing breeze was generally light, with winds at the top mark becoming fickle in the shadow of the trees by the equipment shed. This issue eventually lead to the course being moved around half way thru the day, to a better location more in the middle of the lake, where there was nothing onshore to interrupt the breeze.

Brisbane IOM Challenge - 21/22nd January 2017

32 skippers registered for the event and, pleasingly, all 32 showed up on the day.

Fortunately, the predicted maximum temperature of 35 for Saturday did not eventuate. The predicted south easterly change kicked in early, and after only a few seeding races in a north westerly, the remainder of the 2 days was spent sailing in a sometimes quite brisk south-easterly. Ideal for the Eagleby venue, as the course could be set across the face of the control area.

Racing, under the control of PRO Iain Kirley, got underway on time on Saturday, and at first it didn’t look all that promising, with a light and shifty north westerly and cloudy skies. It then swung around to a light South easterly and for a while the wind didn’t get much better. But by around 11:00 am it had picked up to the predicted 15-25 kph. The wind made it difficult for our resident chef, David Cox, to keep sufficient heat in his BBQ, and lunch was delayed an hour. Oh, and it rained/drizzled on an off for most of the afternoon with the roll of distant thunder thrown in for good measure.

Kawana Open - 10th December

This year's Kawana Open was sailed in a 6-10 Kt south easterly, with a fleet of 10 boats.

This was an umpired event controlled by Garry McMahon, and proved once again just how successful this format can be. Over the entire day there were no harsh words – only pleasant and extremely close racing, with only 2 points separating the first 3 boats at the lunch break.

The afternoon session saw Dave Turton lose his jib on two separate occasions, but he still managed to take the day from Greg Torpy by one point. Special thanks to David Black for scoring and Greg Adams for the photos.
