2017 Central Qld IOM Championships Story

We had nowhere to sail.CQLD IOM Champs 8th 9th July 2017 Nick LINDSLEY 56

We were tossing up between the University Lake – full of weeds which had just been harvested and then the Council guys broke the hydraulics while trying to haul the weeds out of the lake and no clear date for the repair to be completed,

Burrum Heads – too far to travel both days and then setup everything both days and Madsens Rd Lake – still trying to make their insurance company accept that they would be covered by the QRYA Insurance coverage without that being specified in writing anywhere.

6 weeks before the event we finally got the approval (while setting up for John McIntosh’s Birthday Party) that we could sail on The Springs Lake – a new R.V. Park being constructed at Madsens Rd, Nikenbah just South of Pialba Hervey Bay Qld.

With nothing yet in place at this building site it would be a sprint to the start line of the Championships.

After a couple of let downs with a pontoon we acquired 2 pontoons & had them dragged onto a tilt tray tow truck & dropped into the lake, towed them with our 9ft tinny & 4HP outboard into position. A few working bees to get barnacles off, timbers bolted into place, 20mm anchor chain (Anthony I was joking when I said we had the QEII!), truck brake drums as anchors, brackets, cleats, sleepers for the terraced steps and sourcing the bike ramps as our draw-bridge to gain access.

1 week before the Championships we finished the steps & we could then focus on all the other components of the event.

Saturday the 8th July dawned on a typical Hervey Bay Winters day. The forecast was correct (only time in ages!). Variable to 10 knots. This was going to be a hard day for Vince & Bruce in the dinghy!

With the assistance of Ian Ashe helping & guiding me with my newly acquired P.R.O. skills, David & Val Black assisting with the H.M.S. Scoring System and he was ably assisted by Marilyn Russell in scoring duties. We ensured the courses, while shifting, meant they didn’t have to travel the miles we did!

The breeze kept enticing us while we were trying to weigh the boats with calls to start racing early while we had it – maybe should have?

We got the sailing underway shortly after the 10AM posted starting time and they were off! 25 starters – about double the number we had at the last event I was involved with 2 years ago at Burrum Heads! The H.M.S. would certainly get some use this time!

A clever setting of a string of top marks allowed us to alter the course to accommodate slight wind shifts without having to shift any buoys had the racing off with little interference.

Day 1 closed with the top ten being:

Saturday Night about 19 of us met at the Hervey Bay Boat Club for Sundowners, dinner and a few of the photos & videos playing on a screen on the deck. It was an early night for me (but not all).

Sundays forecast was variable (there’s that bloody word again!) then turning Easterly at up to 10-15 knots after lunch. It was getting worse!

I’m dreading an Easterly as we’ve not had one (in the 5 weeks we’ve been on the lake), the lake is not wide enough, will mean extra legs to make it a suitable length and the finish will mean some walking for David & Marilyn!

We settled on the Easterly course, 3 legs & a reach to the same finish line as before – no extra walking for David & Marilyn!

It worked! Aside from a couple of grumbles when the breeze started fading towards the end and we cancelled a couple of races due to no wind, we got 15 races completed and we hadn’t been rained on yet (5 spots don’t count!).

The 4 top spots stayed the same with Paul Jones, Greg Torpy, Aaron Farrar & Geoffrey Morris respectively. Doug Allen put in a sprint to 5th place and Ben Taylor finished off the prizewinners.

Paul Jones 1st, Greg Torpy 2nd, Aaron Farrer 3rd.

Geoffrey Morris 4th, Doug Allen 5th, Ben Taylor 6th & Garry Russell Sportsmanship Award (Not necessarily standing in that order).

Garry Russell was nominated the Sportsmanship Award for going out of his way when he didn’t have to in a race early in the event.

Ian Ashe (P.R.O. Trainer Extraordinaire ) & David Black (Scorer).

Special mention to Performance Hobbies, Great Sandy Straits Marina, Coastal Pontoons for assisting in the pontoons.

I also thank all who assisted in making this event run as smoothly as anyone could have dreamed (both preparing for racing and procedures over the weekend), being our 1st event at the new lake & my 1st radio controlled event as P.R.O., you all helped to make it as easy as possible for me!

Ian Ashe, David & Val Black, Marilyn Russell, Vince Borg, Bruce Yarrow, Kim Mitchell, John MacKander, Peter Robbins, David Laurie, John MacIntosh, Anthony Loveridge, David Bray and anyone else I may have missed!

I also thank the competitors for taking it easy on the New Kid On The Block. Until next year – Fair winds and following seas.
