QLD Dragon Force Championship - 22nd July 2017

Story of the Dragon Force 65 Queensland State Champion Bindawalla Perpetual Trophy.

A silver-plated platter named the "Bindawalla Perpetual Trophy" was donated by the Jefferys Family.

The Trophy is to be held each year by the current Queensland Dragon Force 65 State Champion and then passed onto the next year’s winner.

The name "Bindawalla" is aboriginal for happy home and “represents those values important to us all” (family quote). It was the name of the Jefferys Family boat which they raced successfully and then cruised to the Barrier Reef for a number of years.

Given that most Dragon Force RC skippers have had a lifelong involvement with yacht racing, this trophy reflects that history and is a fitting annual award. It will record event winners from the very first year of official Queensland Dragon Force Championship competition.

2017 Queensland Dragon Force Championship Winner’s Perspective(from this year’s first placed skipper)

The Dragon Force 65 Queensland State titles were hosted by Paradise Radio Yacht Club at Emerald Lakes on Saturday 22nd July, with a record 27 competitors from four Queensland and two NSW clubs competing in this open event.

Paul Martin setting up at Championship

A keen NSW entrant Paul Martin from the Blue Mountains was up at 4am in the morning to travel to Sydney airport and jump on a flight to compete in the first official Q’ld State Title.  Paul and two other NSW competitors, namely Kel and Phil Burgess are members of Royal Sydney Yacht squadron which is to host the first NSW title on 30th September this year.

Conditions on the day were variable with very light air to start the day providing some extremely challenging racing. Phil Burgess, who finished race one in first place ended up 8th in the next race. This set the pattern for sailing the first half of the day, however the trusty Q’ld south-easterly kicked in around lunchtime with the last three or four races sailed competitively.  The close starts featuring several general recalls and one black flag start were evidence of a very competitive fleet.

Top two duel.

As usual, consistency was the key to the day with only three points separating the top two boats with Mike Jefferys (PRYC) 1st on 12 points, Andrew Wilson (WMRYC) 2nd on 15 points and Laurie Hinchcliff (PRYC) 3rd on 24 points.

For Mike "the key to large fleet racing is to sail your own race and stay clear, where possible of potential problems by looking forward, anticipating problems and reducing interactions with other competitors”. “It still came to the wire in nearly every race because the competition was so fierce”.

Mike’s thoughts on the Class:

Tight tussles at top turn

“Being a one design class means boats are perfectly matched with the difference being a single shift in your favour or a good start. It comes down to your skills and not the cheque book that so often rules the winners circle in sailing. My son who loves electronic games also, has gravitated to the sport because it offers such a unique skill set; concentration, focus, competition and fun in an outdoor environment with likeminded friendly members" Today’s Q’ld event has been a great learning experience for this upcoming growing class with now over 500 sailors Australia wide”.

By the Way:     Competitors may not have made it to the ‘social pages’ but apparently the event made it into the Gold Coast Bulletin ‘Lifestyle Coast Weekend Top 3 Family Fun on a Budget’ activities. We were granted this status by the discerning newspaper reporter who wrote that we were ‘fighting it out with the coolest model boats in town’.
