Eddie Cowell Perpetual Trophy Regatta - 4/6th August 2017

Nick Day 3 7Another successful year for the Eddie Cowell Perpetual Trophy, the event seems to be getting bigger every year and this event was no different with close to 50 Skippers attending the event.

We had competitors from all major states, our friends from across the ditch New Zealand and some from as far away as Singapore and Malaysia. It's always nice to have an international flavour and talking to some of the Kiwis, there will be more coming over next year, there's also a rumour that the world champ Zvonko Jelacic from Croatia might be attending next year's event too. There is also talk of a name change to the Eddie Cowell International which has a nice ring to it.

The weather was perfect, although at times the wind had dropped out and 1 race had to be abandoned. Apart from the odd race or two, the wind was consistent enough to keep the races coming. There were 3 fleets and over the three days they managed to keep the races flowing with 15 races (x3 fleets).

EC DAY TWO 285The top four placegetters all managed to get a couple of wins each. Paul Jones was consistent as always and was hardly out of the top 3 throughout the event. He would go on to successfully defend his title with a comfortable win, Sean Wallis from WA pushed him hard though, as did Greg Torpy. Lisa Blackwood from Tasmania was always up there too sailing Jeff Byerley’s new design Nitro, she finished a creditable 4th.

I had to feel for Allan Walker, he was unlucky at times as he would be in a good positions only to suffer intermittent radio problems during the race, this happened more then once. While in a very nice position, Bill Clancy was unfortunate too as his boat decided to stop and have a friendly chat with an unused bouy halfway up the last leg in A fleet, as the rest of the fleet sailed past him :(

Congratulations goes to winner Paul Jones on 33 points, 2nd Sean Wallis 47 points and closely followed by Greg Torpy on 51 points.

Big thank you goes to our scorer David Black and his lovely team of helpers, Anne Walker, Betty Churcher and Elaine Brown. Thanks to our race organisers, course setters and valuable observers.

Thanks also to Nick Lindsley for his fine photography, Ian lobey for his YouTube clips and Bruce Mathers for his videos and photos.

Hope to see all next year Eddie Cowell
