WA 10R Championship - 15th October 2017

The 2017 Ten Rater States for WA were held today by the Champion Lakes Radio Yacht Club out at Champion Lakes. It was a great day of Ten Rater sailing. The breeze took a while to settle in, but our Race Officer, Bruce Robins, had us on the water by 11.00am.

The fleet consisted of 4 Diamonds, a Prizm and a Graphito from Graeme Bantock, an Aero and Sanga from Steve Segemen and one of Lincoln McDowell’s Blades.

Unfortunately, Ray Bassett managed to leave a fairly vital part of his boat at home, so was a non-starter for the day. Simon Ellis and Phil Brown had their Blade and Graphito in the fleet, which was great to see. Steve Grey almost got his new Blade ready in time, but was also missing the same vital bit of kit as Ray – the mast stub and boom.

We got through 4 races before lunch in fairly light conditions. Bruce made sure the racing was fair for all, and held the starts until there was enough breeze to manoeuvre the boats effectively. Rob Mews was kept busy in the boat, making sure the marks were in the right places.

Roger Paul took off in the first couple of races, closely followed by Jeff Green and Graeme Howie. Denton Roberts and Chris Woods were keeping the guys honest, whilst Ian Sherriff really needed a bit more breeze for the Prizm to show it’s ability. Glenn Dawson had a fair bit of trouble early in the day, with rudder troubles.

Once lunch was done, the breeze kicked up a bit, and we had really pleasant 5 to 8 knot winds straight up the lake. The courses were terrific, and there were enough windshifts to keep you on your toes.

Gradually, Glenn got the Sanga sorted out leaving the steering problems behind. The boat started to really move well, and there were a string of race wins put together. As the afternoon progressed, Roger fell out of contention, but Graeme, Jeff and Chris were sailing consistently.

The big question was whether Glenn had enough races to whittle away at the leaders. One by one, the others had some bad races, and the gap was closing. Going into the last two races, any one of three skippers was in contention, with Graeme holding a slender lead from Jeff and Glenn.

Those three fought out the last two races, and in a close finish to the regatta, Glenn came out on top by a few points, and Graeme and Jeff finished on equal points in second. Graeme took the second place from Jeff on a countback.

All in all, the sailing was of a good standard. We really don’t sail these boats enough to become experts at them. However, one pleasing thing was that all the boats made it through the day, without breakdowns.

Bruce was ably assisted by Rob Mews, Ray Bassett and Steve Grey on the day, and we all thank the guys for volunteering their time. We value their contribution greatly.
