TAS RM State Championship - 17th September
The weather gods agreed to give us at least one day of fantastic conditions to run one of our most prestigious state events. Due to prevailing conditions the venue was swapped back to Risdon Brook dam. It was the right decision. The mid to top end A rig conditions made for a great day of racing the formula ones of the radio yachting world. (apologies for bias here).
John Cole-Cook stole the show with his impeccable Scalpel and top end racing skills. Congratulations go to Cookie for his dominance on the day. Eight bullets and his worst placing was a third.
It is great to have him active again in the club, and it sends a big message out for next February's Nationals.
Michael Bell 10R Memorial Trophy 2017
Michael Bell 10R Memorial Trophy 2017
It was an almost breezeless Saturday morning at Jackadder Lake when 7 enthusiastic sailors arrived for the much coveted Michael Bell 10R Trophy. Race PRO Warren Rock and his assistants were in no hurry to set a course in what swirling puffs drifted to and fro across and around the water. It seemed there would be little chance of getting in the required number of races. The main point of interest at that stage seemed to be in Phil Brown’s stunning looking self built Graphito.
Racing finally got underway after a long delay following some light breeze from the north and Hub Bell with the borrowed Diamond showed his ability to pick the fickle breeze by putting 3 convincing wins out of the first four races on the board.
After some course re adjustment to accommodate for a wind change Glenn Dawson with his Sanga and the NRW of Rob Mews started to dust off the cobwebs (aka weed) and put some very low scores and wins on the board. Hub had incurred the wrath of the weed gods which dragged him back to the field. Despite the diamonds of Jeff Green, Roger Paul and Denton Roberts having some share of the podium places it became a shoot out by the Sanga and the NRW with Glen’s Sanga taking a well deserved 1st place after some severe weeding in early races.
Thanks to PRO Warren Rock and assistants Chris Woods and Bob Paton for their efforts.

Lake Macquarie Radio Yacht Club Interclub – 26/27th August, 2017
Saturday the 26th October, dawned a clear morning where 16 10R’s gathered at Edwards Park, Booragul for Round 4 of the 10R interclub scratch event. The PRO, Graham Payne, as well as the LMRYC IOM contingent of Paul Jones and Mark Wilson set a windward/leeward course that suited the location nicely. The skipper’s meeting was ended with a minutes silence for the recent and sad passing of Arnold Grant’s wife, Ros. Ros was a lovely lady that graced LMRYC regattas over the years with her lovely corned beef and her delicious sweets and, of course, always a chat. She will be sadly missed...MORE HERE

Report on the Newport Classic
The Newport Classic IOM Regatta attracted 26 entrants from 8 clubs from Central QLD to Northern NSW. The Moreton Radio Yacht Squadron revived the event after a few years’ hiatus and the response exceeded the expectations. Recent improvements in the local facilities, including landscaping of the foreshore, cafe’ coffee shop, serviced toilets and a floating pontoon, deemed the location too good not to share with the Radio Sailing community.

2017 US IOM Nationals, Garland TX
2017 US IOM Nationals, Garland TX
Forty-one boats contested the US IOM Nationals on Lake Ray Hubbard, Garland, Texas held 20-22 October, this included four classy gents from Australia of which two even bought their wives (who kindly assisted with race management support).
The team of Rosco & Andree Bennett, Tim & Elaine Brown, Sean Wallis and Glenn Dawson arrived a couple of days prior in order to be well prepared for the event and to kick things off the first port of call was local “gas” station (directly across the road from our salubrious accommodation) to stock up with much needed refreshment supplies. To ensure that these were kept cold an esky was procured for the Australian Radio Sailing Team and after 15m of duct tape was used to reinforce the body the unit was trialed – “good to go” was the call!

Thirty six boats contested the NZ IOM Nationals held on Lake Rua, Christchurch, which was hosted by the Christchurch Model Yacht Club. This included two Aussie entries of Russell Gray from Qld and myself from WA. After an overnight flight via Auckland I arrived to a relatively clear day and after a quick nap headed down to the lake to undertake the measurement & registration for the event and have a quick sail. While the sun may have been shining it ended up being an extremely quick sail with the wind chill factor cold enough to freeze the nuts off a brass monkey leading to a prompt return to the warmth of the hotel room.
Travelling to NZ with boat box and rig box saw the need to rent one of the radio yachties most desired vehicles, the mighty Nissan Wingroad! It’s choice bro’. Fully loaded it was off to the regatta for a full day of racing.
