C/QLD IOM Championship - 8/9th July
2017 Central Qld IOM Championships Story
We were tossing up between the University Lake – full of weeds which had just been harvested and then the Council guys broke the hydraulics while trying to haul the weeds out of the lake and no clear date for the repair to be completed,
Burrum Heads – too far to travel both days and then setup everything both days and Madsens Rd Lake – still trying to make their insurance company accept that they would be covered by the QRYA Insurance coverage without that being specified in writing anywhere.
6 weeks before the event we finally got the approval (while setting up for John McIntosh’s Birthday Party) that we could sail on The Springs Lake – a new R.V. Park being constructed at Madsens Rd, Nikenbah just South of Pialba Hervey Bay Qld.
With nothing yet in place at this building site it would be a sprint to the start line of the Championships.
NSW RM GP Rd 2 - 23rd Jul
On Sunday, the 23rd July the second round of the Marblehead GP Series was held at Mount Penang Gardens, Kariong and hosted by the Northern Mariners.
Six enthusiastic skippers turned up to race, Maurie Fletcher and Paul Ziems sailing Boogies, Andrew Sands sailing his Paradox, Glenn Kinsela sailing a Starkers, Patrick O’Donnell sailing the Dreadnought and Garry Bromley sailing his Prime Number.
The weather was fine and sunny and the breeze was a very nice 10 to 15 knot westerly. A windward and return course of three laps was set using the start line as the leeward gate and a run to the finish on the final lap. Racing got under way after a short delay at about 10.20am.
NSW A Class GP Rd 2 - 25th Jun
A Class GP 2 Report 25 June 2017 - Hosted by Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club
This event was sailed at the Koonawarra Bay Sailing Club on Sunday 25 June 2017. The weather at this event was sunny but quite blustery from the westerly direction in the morning with gusts at 12 knots, and all 8 entrants opting for A rigs. After an hour the wind increased to 14 knots with gusts of 17 knots meaning most entrants downsized their rigs. Course was set as port hand windward / leeward and the 8 entrants sailed just 8 heats before lunch was taken. Unfortunately Glenn Kinsela retired early due to various problems with his “new” Stiletto which showed potential early in the series.

2017 US IOM Nationals, Garland TX
Forty-one boats contested the US IOM Nationals on Lake Ray Hubbard, Garland, Texas held 20-22 October, this included four classy gents from Australia of which two even bought their wives (who kindly assisted with race management support).
The team of Rosco & Andree Bennett, Tim & Elaine Brown, Sean Wallis and Glenn Dawson arrived a couple of days prior in order to be well prepared for the event and to kick things off the first port of call was local “gas” station (directly across the road from our salubrious accommodation) to stock up with much needed refreshment supplies. To ensure that these were kept cold an esky was procured for the Australian Radio Sailing Team and after 15m of duct tape was used to reinforce the body the unit was trialed – “good to go” was the call!

Thirty six boats contested the NZ IOM Nationals held on Lake Rua, Christchurch, which was hosted by the Christchurch Model Yacht Club. This included two Aussie entries of Russell Gray from Qld and myself from WA. After an overnight flight via Auckland I arrived to a relatively clear day and after a quick nap headed down to the lake to undertake the measurement & registration for the event and have a quick sail. While the sun may have been shining it ended up being an extremely quick sail with the wind chill factor cold enough to freeze the nuts off a brass monkey leading to a prompt return to the warmth of the hotel room.
Travelling to NZ with boat box and rig box saw the need to rent one of the radio yachties most desired vehicles, the mighty Nissan Wingroad! It’s choice bro’. Fully loaded it was off to the regatta for a full day of racing.
