WA RC Laser Championship - 29th October 2017
The 2017 WA RC Laser State Titles have been run and won.
A steady south to south westerly breeze greeted WAnderers Radio Sailing Club at the South Perth lake and it stayed in nearly all day.
All boats started with A rigs for the first few races then, as the breeze strengthened, B rigs were favoured by all skippers. With pretty tight racing throughout the day, the last few races determined the places. Various problems hampered defending champion Dave Pruden’s start to the day and he had to call it a day after 5 races.
A big congratulations to Rod Popham who came out on top, 3 points in front of Andy Cummins in 2nd with Dave Bedford 3rd, beating Adam Viney onto the podium by 1 point.
QLD IOM Championship - 28/29th October
The State of Queensland International One Meter Championships have been sailed and won in perfect conditions in the Gladstone Marina last weekend.
The predicted 7-12 knot north to northeasterlies arrived at the exact start time allowing PRO Ian Ashe to set a perfect course close to the skippers and with uninterrupted and unrestricted winds. Skippers were impressed with the elevated vantage of their yachts and the constant breeze, prompting many to suggest the Gladstone location as one of the best places to sail in Queensland. Skippers from the Wynnum/Manly, Springfield Lakes, Kawana, Brisbane, Moreton, Fraser Coast and north to Mackay joined the Gladstone contingent to make a disappointing but strong 16 boat competition.

2017 US IOM Nationals, Garland TX
Forty-one boats contested the US IOM Nationals on Lake Ray Hubbard, Garland, Texas held 20-22 October, this included four classy gents from Australia of which two even bought their wives (who kindly assisted with race management support).
The team of Rosco & Andree Bennett, Tim & Elaine Brown, Sean Wallis and Glenn Dawson arrived a couple of days prior in order to be well prepared for the event and to kick things off the first port of call was local “gas” station (directly across the road from our salubrious accommodation) to stock up with much needed refreshment supplies. To ensure that these were kept cold an esky was procured for the Australian Radio Sailing Team and after 15m of duct tape was used to reinforce the body the unit was trialed – “good to go” was the call!
NSW Laser Championship - 29th October 2017
Scott Fleming is the 2017 NSW State RC Laser Champion.
But beneath that headline there was a day of high drama on the water; with everyone having at least one drama of some sort. We had radios crashing; we had servos cooking; we had weed; new sail problems. Everyone was touched – from the top to the bottom. But it was a great day.
I believe many of us had results that exceeded expectations; and conversely… some of us did not come up to our expectations. And isn’t that what it is all about?

Thirty six boats contested the NZ IOM Nationals held on Lake Rua, Christchurch, which was hosted by the Christchurch Model Yacht Club. This included two Aussie entries of Russell Gray from Qld and myself from WA. After an overnight flight via Auckland I arrived to a relatively clear day and after a quick nap headed down to the lake to undertake the measurement & registration for the event and have a quick sail. While the sun may have been shining it ended up being an extremely quick sail with the wind chill factor cold enough to freeze the nuts off a brass monkey leading to a prompt return to the warmth of the hotel room.
Travelling to NZ with boat box and rig box saw the need to rent one of the radio yachties most desired vehicles, the mighty Nissan Wingroad! It’s choice bro’. Fully loaded it was off to the regatta for a full day of racing.
