The Peel Regional Ranking
The Peel Regional Ranking
event was held on Sunday 4th February, at the Rivergums lake in Baldivis. A
fleet of 16 skippers entered the regatta. The wind was from the south-east at
the beginning of the day, and this was forecast to gradually build and shift to
the south.
Glenn Dawson was the PRO for the event, and had racing underway soon after
10.00am. Early indications were that Hub Bell was in for a cracker of a day, and
Ian Ritchie was sailing really fast. No one skipper stood out, as the winner’s
podium was being shared around amongst numerous skippers.
Early in the day everyone, except Chris Aberle, went to their B rig. This proved
to be a good decision for Chris, as no sooner had the next group of races
commenced, the wind moderated. Chris reeled of a couple of second places, and
found himself up near the top of the table.
Gary Cotterell and Jeff Green were sailing consistently, never far away from the
leaders. Gradually, this pair started to exert some authority on the regatta. By
lunchtime, Gary had built a comfortable lead, with Jeff not far behind.
After lunch, the wind veered to the south, and looked as though it might build
in strength. The increase in strength was not forthcoming though, and all
skippers stayed with their A rigs. Unfortunately for Ian and Hub, their days
sailing came to an abrupt end with winch trouble - a pity, as the two of them
were sailing well.
Mat Donelly took a while to get his boat going, after not sailing for some time,
but towards the end of the day, managed to put in a few fine performances. Mark
Shepherd and Chris Woods also showed that they could give the leaders some
stick. Overall, of the 16 skippers, there were 8 different heat winners.
At the end of 19 races, the trophies were awarded to Gary Cotterell – 1st, Jeff
Green – 2nd and Chris Aberle -3rd. The encouragement trophy was awarded to
Kelvin Uren.
It was agreed that the regatta was most enjoyable, with everyone looking forward
to the next event at Jackadder Lake on March 11th.
